PROF. (DR.) UPENDRA BAXI

Professor of Law at the Universities of Warwick and Delhi

Professor Upendra Baxi is Emeritus Professor of Law at the Universities of Warwick and Delhi, and one of India’s most distinguished jurists and educators.

Educated at the University of Bombay and later at the University of California, Berkeley—where he earned a Doctorate in Juristic Sciences—Professor Baxi began his academic career at Sydney Law School before joining the University of Delhi in 1973. He went on to become one of its youngest professors and later served as Dean of the Faculty of Law (1975–1978). He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi (1990–1994) and the University of South Gujarat (1982–1985), while also leading the Indian Law Institute as Honorary Director (Research) and presiding over the Indian Society of International Law.

In 1996, he joined the University of Warwick as Professor of Law in Development, where he taught until 2008 and continues as Emeritus. He has also taught at leading institutions worldwide, including Duke, Durham, NYU, Toronto, and the National Law Universities in India.

Professor Baxi has authored over 250 articles and several landmark books, including The Future of Human Rights and Human Rights in a Posthuman World. His pioneering scholarship spans human rights, constitutional theory, legal sociology, law and technology, and globalization.

Honoured with the Padma Shri in 2011, honorary doctorates, and multiple lifetime achievement awards, his writings have influenced courts in India and beyond. A reformer, teacher, and public intellectual, Professor Baxi’s work continues to shape contemporary debates on justice, rights, and the law.
