We are honoured to welcome Hon’ble Mr. Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Visitor of HNLU. Enrolled as an advocate in November 1985, he practised in civil, criminal, constitutional, service, and tax matters at the Gwalior and Jabalpur benches of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Appointed an Additional Judge in November 2005, he became a permanent judge in 2008. During this period, he contributed significantly to judicial administration, serving on committees overseeing infrastructure, finance, juvenile justice, and higher judicial services.
In October 2019, Justice Maheshwari was appointed the first Chief Justice of the newly constituted Andhra Pradesh High Court. His leadership saw the inauguration of the Chief Justice’s bungalow in Vijayawada, formulation of judicial service rules, and pioneering the state’s first virtual court hearings amid the pandemic. In January 2021, he became Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, serving with distinction until August 2021. Elevated to the Supreme Court on 31 August 2021, he has since authored landmark judgments—including on the Bhopal gas tragedy compensation and Supreme Court’s power to grant divorce under Article 142. His nuanced, principled jurisprudence reflects a profound dedication to equity and constitutionalism. HNLU eagerly anticipates his visionary guidance and esteemed association.
